Anna Gilbert – Christmas : I know – it’s June, and I’m recommending a Christmas CD (which I don’t often do), but the arrangements and this woman’s voice are just too good to be missed. Anna puts her heart and her wonderful voice into this work, and it feels good. Merry Merry.

Gabe Bondoc – Timing : Power pop from a master of the art – it is so entertaining to listen to Gabe. He takes a melody and wrings every last drop of goodness out of it with his masterful delivery. Very nice harmonies and clever arrangements help this one along too. Pop Wonder.

Guff Morlix – Last Exit to Happyland : If you want to hear some well written and well produced folk-blues sung by someone who knows how to sing and play them, you’ll want this CD. Guff plays with a quality and integrity not often heard, and it’s worth hearing. Gritty and Honest.

Molly Bryant – Be Brave : The longer I listened to this CD, the more I realized I was listening to someone who knows how to arrange her songs into a cohesive compilation of genius. Between the dead-on a-cappella, the clever arrangements, and originality, this girl has it. Awesome Pop.

Dave C. Norman – Higher Ground : Dave has created one funky, horns oriented groove thang here. He’s covering some of the best with a flair and talent seldom seen. I promise you that if you’re not moving after you’re half way through this, you need a checkup. Great Grooves.

The Turnback – Drawn in Chalk : This band has blended elements of 60’s and 70’s retro-rock to create a CD that sounds both old and new in its approach and delivery. The songs are well-written, pithy, and fun to listen to – and what’s wrong with that after all? Turn up The Turnback.

Abigail Stauffer – No Contradictions : Abigail has a singular voice in her style of writing. These tunes are not overdone, but they do have a beautiful understated complexity. This artist uses her voice like a finely tuned instrument, and her arrangements beckon you to listen on. Fine Craft.

Glen Matlock & The Philistines – Rattle Your Cage : Rock and Roll Hall of Famer and Sex Pistols founding member, Glen Matlock has released a dead-on, straight-ahead rock effort here. Driving, guitar-driven melodies show that Glen has not forgotten how to rock. Matlock Knack.

Matt Genese – Visceral Places : Matt has produced a collection of songs in this effort that tell vivid stories of urban life and the people that have left their mark on his soul. Some of these stories are happy, some sad, and all are well told by this urban folk artist. Worth the listen.

Austin Cobb – Bedposts and Barstools : A fresh and rockin’ country rock CD from Austin Cobb reminds me that there are still good singer songwriters out there. The selections are fun, rockin, and the CD is self described “Home grown dirt Country music from Oklahoma”. Rock On, OK.

Paul Spring – State of the Union : Paul’s voice is very direct as he tells his tales with ballads and love songs about topical subjects. Well arranged and played, this CD is another example of cleverness in writing about everyday subjects that keeps the listener engaged. Well done, Paul.

CJ Sorg – The Brains of the Operation : CJ has an interesting kind of acoustic-rock offering here. His voice is very unique and the writing is stellar. He says that the songs gave him the “spine-shivers” when he felt that they ‘came to him’ as opposed to him writing them. I’m with you, bro.

The Stumble – Lie to Me : Simply the best Blues-Rock CD I have heard in a long time. This six piece band writes their own rockin’ tunes, and is headed up by singer Paul Melville, and features saxophonist Simon Anthony. These guys are the real deal, and they’re real good. Have a Listen.

Ken Clark Organ Trio – Dr. Organstien : This is some funky organ playin’ on this CD, I mean to tell you! If you like the B3 sound, and like it backed up by some jamming guitar work, you will enjoy this CD. These guys have been together for 15 years, and it shows. Organ Virtuosity.

PhillyBloco – Funk E Samba : Samba, Reggae and New Orleans riffs set to Brazillian Carnival beats is what you will hear on this offering from PhillyBloco. From the first track to the last I was moving and I just wanted to hear the next track. This is good time music. Happy Grooves.

The Salty Suites – Live At Castoro Cellars : Traditional bluegrass well played and even more impressive that it is all performed live. There is some fine singing and playing (especially fiddle playing) on this effort. These folks sound like they’re having a lot of fun. Worthy Wailing.

Sean Michael Dargan – Snap Your Fingers & Stomp Your Feet : Sean mixes a lot of styles into this 13-track CD. All of it is well done, though, and I like the fact that it’s topical and varied. You won’t hear this on the radio, but give it a go – it might be just the thing. Nimble Nonsense.

Bill Johnson – Still Blue : Well now, here is some rockin’ blues from a man who knows how to sing the stuff– Mr. Bill Johnson. From beginning to end, you will be knocked out by his razor sharp vocals cutting through captivating hooks and great blues songwriting. Still Excellent.

Phil Jasselmyer – Rainy Day : Great easy listening instrumental guitar arranged, produced, and performed by Phil Jasselmyer is what we have on this effort. The works cover many different styles of music, and it is all done quite well. Put a pot of coffee on, and hit play. Peaceful Pieces.

Doug Bryan – Antique Future : Doug’s music is sort of a cross between The Beatles, Elvis Costello and Squeeze. These are amazingly well-constructed songs, very different and very listenable. It helps that they are also so well arranged and produced. An Ecclectic Keeper.

The Monitors – Three Way Disco : OK, just so that there’s no misunderstanding, this straight ahead rock and roll is anything BUT Disco. It is Vikas Pawa on Bass and Vocals, Morgan Schlaline on Guitar and Tommy Pritchett on Drums, and quite simply, they ROCK! Get This.

Mint Julep Jazz Band – Durham On Saturday Night : Durham, NC is where this Swing era jazz band hails from, and they simply nail the feel on this 16 track set of tunes from the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s. If you like this style of music at all, you’ll want this in the collection. Swing, Baby.

The Black Bear Band – Dust and Bone : From the title track of this listen I could tell these guys know how to set a groove, and keep your attention. It’s kind of an eclectic mix of Rock styles but tinged with just the right amount of soul it keeps you always wanting more. Rock of Ages.

Frequency – Project Life : Upbeat and sardonic at the same time, these tracks grab your attention with a straight-ahead rock approach sound and true lyrical realism. The sound is very edgy, and the lyrics are all about growing up when, let’s face it – none of us really wants to. Life Happens.

Uncle Rex – Fingerspeech : African Jazz on acoustic guitar that is well-mixed and arranged is what you will be listening to with this offering from Uncle Rex. Referred to as the pioneer of jazz music in Zambia, you can’t help but groove to this flavorful collection. Pleasant Picking.

Phil James – A Time and a Place : This Welsh singer/songwriter has penned some quite listenable and soulful material here. I like Phil’s voice and delivery – it’s direct without distracting from the message. Enhanced by fine area musicians, this is Folk-Rock at its Finest.

Andy Michaelson – Sail the Moon : Andy’s pop-rock tunes and ballads will make you smile AND think. He is currently traveling around the world doing relief work, and where he goes his guitar goes as well. This guy’s tunes are worth having in your collection. A True Troubadour.

Maddie Shuler – Roots and Wings : Maddie has a way with her folk sound that is surprisingly engaging and direct for a 17-year old. You can hear influences of bluegrass, Americana, and Celtic influences in her delivery and arrangements. Fine guitar work throughout. Sweet Strings.

Diaspora – Diaspora : This is some excellent straight-ahead, post bob jazz, featuring original compositions by Tito Charneco, Brad Leali, Stefan Karlsson, Evan Weiss, Tony Baker, Fred Hamilton and Jose Aponte. Put this in when you just want to jazz it up, baby. Great Grooves.

Selby & Son – To Be Young : This father and son group has a really unique and listenable take on some classics that you really haven’t heard until you’ve heard them do it. I especially like what they did with some of the Bob Dylan and Ray Charles selections. Originality Rocks.
